This installation pays tribute to and opens a dialogue with the ancestors of my lineage, understanding “ancestors” to mean those who are part of my ancestry, both biologically and through their belonging to a community of shared identity that extends beyond blood ties. The quilt piece, features a quote by Cherríe Moraga taken from her book Native Country of the Heart (2019), reflecting on the risks of forgetting. I view the nearly 35 hours I devoted to this small square as time spent meditating on these words. The intentionally difficult legibility of the text forces one to look closely to decipher the message, fostering a greater intimacy with the viewer. Next is a video projection featuring a neighbor from my family’s village in Asturias speaking about the processes related to wool that she grew up witnessing in her home. Finally, there is the fleece of an unprocessed sheep. When combined with the other elements of this installation, the very materiality of the wool becomes a pathway for a deeper reflection on the connections between humanity, the land, and tradition.
