On the coast of Sowasset
Photographic print on linen fabric, cotton fabric, thread.
60 x 40 cm.
Influenced by the approaches of thinkers within the new materialisms, this piece seeks to engage with the environment through the repeated gesture of the line in drawing and the stitches in embroidery. The nature of this environment, as mediated by the image, guides the movement of the hand to trace rhythmic lines, integrating the representation of the place with its inherent sensation. By sewing the images onto the fabric in a way that obscures their interpretation, they also draw attention to the perception and documentation of a site, going beyond figurative photographic representation. The title refers to this site by its place name in the language of the Setalcott Indigenous people, thereby affirming both the use of this language and the resilience of that community.
