Este puente llamado un río
Xalda wool, wool dyed with cochineal and oak.
40 x 63 cm and 50 x 16 cm.
This piece stems from a desire to reflect on cultural hybridity through material elements composed of that very hybridity. The title refers to the pioneering book by Chicana authors Gloria Anzaldúa and Cherríe Moraga, This Bridge Called My Back (1981). The first tapestry figuratively represents two of the rivers from my places of origin, which are also the sources of the wool and dyes used to make it: the Nalón River, in Asturias, and the Hudson River, in New York. The second tapestry addresses the concept of “mestiza” more explicitly. This exploration emphasizes the significance of the territory and its natural elements as fundamental catalysts for shaping the way in which the development of an identity is conceived—one that specifically speaks with pride from the border.
